Executive Corner - The Truth Behind the Multivitamin Scare

Multivitamins Scare

I recently came across a news story that discussed the findings of a study linking multivitamins and other supplements to higher mortality rates for older women. The controversial study analyzed data from almost 40,000 participants and the findings were published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

I had chance to review the study particulars and wanted to address a couple points in hopes of diffusing any concern these findings may have caused.

First and foremost, as all of the participants were women who started the 19 year survey at an average age of 61, the findings cannot be applied to the general population.  In addition, some of the deaths are attributed to consumers ignoring recommended doses and incorrectly believing that because they are vitamins, ‘the more the merrier’.

Another point to highlight is that the study was observational in nature and the data was self reported, indicating that the findings can serve to point out a correlation but they do not show specific cause and effect. Any number of outside factors could skew the results. For example, diet and other lifestyle factors clearly have an impact on mortality rates. Additionally, the researchers themselves have stated that their results do not warrant inflated concerns for elderly women.

Whether it is a prescription medicine, supplement or vitamin, it is critical that consumers understand how important it is to follow recommended dosage instructions and to always keep their physicians informed as to what they may be taking to avoid any dangerous drug interactions. Multivitamins are important to counteract deficiencies in many segments of the population, with special formulations targeting each population’s specific needs. For example, vegan multivitamins are available for people who don’t consume meat products, gummy or chewable multivitamins are for children, and prenatal vitamins are for pregnant women.

Cranberry - the new "Man-berry"?

Cranberry - the new Man-berry?

Everyday, we go through our typical reading of what's new in the industry: ingredient research, new products, industry news that affects us all, etc., and we periodically come upon some news we think is worth sharing with you.

So we've all heard of the benefits cranberries have for women, specifically with UTIs (urinary tract infection), but did you know that the little red berry may very well be beneficial for men as well?

There was a study done in the Czech Republic claiming that the protective benefits of cranberries toward urinary tract health may now extend to men's prostates.

According to the Czech scientists, after six months of supplementation with 1,500 mg per day of dried powdered cranberries, there were marked improvements in the International Prostate Symptom Score, 'quality of life' measures, urination parameters, and lower levels of prostate specific antigen (PSA).

"Our trial is the first to evaluate cranberry in the treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) specifically in men with [benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)], elevated PSA levels and non-bacterial prostatitis," said researchers, led by Dr. Jitka Vostalova.

"Unlike currently used medication for prostatitis and LUTS, cranberry has no adverse effects. Our findings may assist men suffering from LUTS, and also their clinicians, to decide on a treatment that is both inexpensive and natural, like cranberry," researchers added.
